I work for a US company fully remote. The visa fit perfectly - no Italian employer needed, and the consul processed it faster than I expected once my income proof was solid.

What the consulate actually checks
Figures are indicative and can vary slightly by consulate.
Common digital nomad visa mistakes
Showing savings instead of recurring income
The consulate wants to see money arriving regularly - stable, recurring income from remote work. A lump sum in a savings account does not prove you can sustain yourself in Italy.
Prepare several months of bank statements showing consistent deposits from clients or an employer, plus your remote work contract or agreements.
Confusing this visa with local employment
The digital nomad visa is for people who already earn remotely - it does not let you take a job from an Italian employer. Applying with an Italian job offer puts you in the wrong category.
If you want to work for an Italian company, look at the Nulla Osta work permit route instead. This visa is strictly for existing remote earners.
Using a short tourist health policy
The consulate requires valid health insurance that covers Italy with adequate limits throughout your stay - a standard travel policy designed for short trips will not satisfy this requirement.
Obtain a policy explicitly covering long-term residence in Italy with sufficient coverage limits before you file.
Skipping the codice fiscale step after arrival
Almost everything after you land - opening a bank account, signing a lease, registering at Questura - requires a codice fiscale first. Leaving it until later creates a chain of delays.
Get your codice fiscale immediately after arrival. It is free and the first step in converting your visa to a permesso di soggiorno.
Not researching the tax situation before moving
Once you establish residence in Italy you become subject to Italian tax rules. The Forfettario flat-rate regime can be very favorable for remote earners, but it has its own conditions and is not automatic.
Research the Forfettario regime and, if needed, consult a commercialista before you move - not after you already have the permesso.
People who did it
Condensed from the discussion on our forum, where members answer questions and post updates.
I am a freelance designer, not in tech, and I still qualified. The key was clean bank statements showing steady client payments over several months.
Plan the taxes before you move, not after. We looked at the Forfettario regime early and it saved us a lot of stress once we had the permesso.
From file to permesso, in five steps
- 1
Prove your remote income
Gather your remote work contract or client agreements, recent bank statements and tax returns. Income should be stable, recurring and above the consulate minimum.
- 2
Sort accommodation and health cover
Line up a rental or address in Italy plus valid health insurance covering Italy with adequate limits - not a short tourist policy.
- 3
File at the consulate
Book the Italian consulate for your jurisdiction and submit the type D file. No Nulla Osta and no quota wait - the consul decides directly.
- 4
Move within the visa validity
Enter Italy, get your codice fiscale and open a bank account. The codice fiscale comes first - you need it for almost everything.
- 5
Convert to a permesso
Apply for the permesso di soggiorno in Questura soon after arrival. First permit is short, then you renew - and you can move toward longer-term residence.
Digital nomad visa questions, answered
Does my job have to be in tech to qualify?
No. The visa covers any profession that can be done remotely using digital tools - writers, designers, marketers, consultants, and remote employees in any sector all qualify. What matters is that you earn your income online, not what industry you work in.
Do I need a quota spot or a Nulla Osta?
No. The digital nomad visa sits outside the Decreto Flussi quotas under article 27 of the Testo Unico sull'Immigrazione. There is no quota to compete for and no Nulla Osta required. The consul reviews your file directly.
What income proof does the consulate want?
You need to show stable, recurring income - typically several months of bank statements showing regular deposits, combined with your remote work contract or client agreements and recent tax returns. A single lump sum or savings alone is not enough.
Can I bring family members on this visa?
Family reunification is possible under Italian immigration law, but it follows a separate process with its own requirements. Plan the family steps in parallel with your own application rather than assuming they are automatic.
What happens after I arrive - how do I get the permesso?
After entering Italy you apply for the permesso di soggiorno at the local Questura. Get your codice fiscale first - you need it for almost every other step including opening a bank account and signing paperwork at the Questura.
How does taxation work once I live in Italy?
Once you establish Italian residence you are generally subject to Italian income tax. The Forfettario flat-rate regime can apply to remote earners and may reduce your tax burden significantly, but it has conditions and is not automatic. Research this before you move, not after.
How is this different from the Lavoro Autonomo (self-employment) visa?
The Lavoro Autonomo category has roughly 700 quota spots a year that fill very quickly. The digital nomad visa has no quota at all. If you are already self-employed and earning remotely, the digital nomad path is generally faster and more accessible.
Where do I file - in Italy or in my home country?
You prepare and file the entire application at the Italian consulate with jurisdiction over your current country of residence. Nothing is filed inside Italy first. The consulate reviews and decides your case directly.
