Visa D vs permesso
The visa D is the entry sticker in your passport, valid up to 90 days. The permesso is the separate plastic residence card issued in Italy that lets you live, work and travel in Schengen.
KIT postale
You file your first application through the KIT postale at a Poste Italiane Sportello Amico, not at the Questura directly. Submit it within 8 working days of arriving in Italy.
The ricevuta
After filing you get a ricevuta (receipt). It proves your application is pending and lets you stay legally and re-enter Italy, but it is not the card itself - some uses are limited.
Fingerprinting
